DISH News: Bits and Pieces

Hello again! Sorry it’s been a while since I’ve updated. There’s so much going on with DISH right now, that I don’t want to split it up into separate blogs. So, I just decided to do this “bits and pieces” blog post to give you a rundown of recent DISH news and updates.

Some of this might not be new to you, but I’m just catching up! It looks like DISH is going to be pretty busy this year.

Top DISH news items include:

  • DISH is closing 300 Blockbuster stores. This will account for the loss of about 3,000 jobs. But is DISH to blame? I don’t think so. With the rise of Blockbuster @Home and the even more popular Netflix, there hasn’t been much need for physical movie rental locations for quite some time. In fact, I didn’t even know Blockbuster stores actually still existed. If you ask me, this is a result of changing technology that is just long overdue. I feel for the employees, but the sooner DISH loses Blockbuster stores all together, the better.
  • CBS has filed an amended lawsuit against DISH. Yep, another one. CBS is now claiming that that Dish Network hid facts about the AutoHop commercial skipping feature. CBS adds that no contract would have been entered into had the details been known about the Hopper function. I think CBS is reaching; the AutoHop feature is really nothing new, just more advanced. They’re panicking, so they’re grasping at straws because they’re realizing that DISH is giving the customers what they want. I doubt DISH has anything to worry about. I see them coming out ahead in this case.
  • DISH wants to buy out Sprint. In order to provide wireless service, DISH needs a couple of basic ingredients: cell phone towers and a wireless spectrum. Sprint has the towers, and Clearwire (an Internet service provider) has the spectrum. DISH’s solution? Well, they might be bidding to buy out both Clearwire and Sprint. Who’d have ever thought that would happen? It’s easy to brush it off and assume it’ll never happen, but I’ve seen crazier things. Only time will tell with this one.
  • KCRG is back on DISH. If you’re a Cedar Rapids area DISH customer, you’ll be pleased to know that KCRG is back. In fact, it should be on right now. Contract negotiation problems pushed the local ABC affiliate off DISH airwaves on December 18, 2012, but an agreement has been reached. KCRG was expected to return to regular programming today (January 25, 2013) shortly after 2:00 pm Central Standard Time.

I’ll leave you with that for now. Quite a bit going on with DISH these days, huh? I’ll come back next week and update you if anything has changed or bring some more recent news with me.

Have a great weekend!

PS – If you’re interested in ordering DISH, check out my favorite sales partner, Satellite Solutions Network. They offer a $75 rebate just for ordering with them.
